Permanent Sterilization

Permanent Sterilization

Permanent sterilization was discussed. We discussed that this is a non-reversible method of contraception and should only be used when the patient is certain she does not desire children in the future. It is a surgical procedure that can usually be performed in a minimally invasive manner via laparoscopy. We discussed risks, including the risk of regret and surgical risks, including pain, bleeding, infection, need for blood transfusion, damage to surrounding organs such as bowel, bladder, ureters, ovaries, uterus, and vessels, and the possible need for exploratory laparotomy. We also discussed the risk of failure and thus, pregnancy and discussed an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy if one were to become pregnant after permanent sterilization. We discussed benefits, including the long-term nature of this choice, and the benefit of avoidance of hormonal contraceptives and their associated risks. We discussed alternative methods of contraception, especially long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) and partner vasectomy.
